Notes:

By 1903, at the time of their marriage, Matthys and Susanna were both from the Mushroom Valley area of the Winburg district. The marriage was in the Dutch Reformed Church building at Mushroom Valley. She was 20 at the time.

Sometime after 1903, they spend time in the Dewetsdorp region. On 4 September 1915 the couple registers [#1] in the Dutch Reformed Parish of Ladybrand. They are registered as arriving from Dewetsdorp.

Determining the detail surrounding the children of the couple has been a challenge. We provide below [#2] the argument for the order of birth of those children without dates of birth.

Notes: The 17-year old Susanna is confirmed in the Dutch Reformed parish of Ficksburg on 17 October 1930 [#1]. The same books show her moving to the parish of Jagersfontein on 27 June 1938.

Notes: Matthys is the second sibling to bear his double name, the first having died before this young man's birth.
His first marriage is to Jane Gardner Chalmers, and his second to Molly Helena de Beer (nee Els). There are no children from the first marriage and one, Matthys Johannes, from the second.

We do not have dates of birth for Jacobus Frederik or Theunis Jacobus, but we can present the following argument for their placement in the sequence of children. The Afrikaner Naming Convention requires that the first son be named for the husband's father, the second for the wife's father, and the third for the husband himself. In this case, the wife's father is named Jacobus Frederik. This requires that the second son be named Jacobus Frederik. However, we have a known date of birth for the third son, Matthys Johannes, named after the husband himself. This means Jacobus Frederik is born before Matthys Johannes, and the only period with enough space for such a son to be born is ca. 1908. Thereby, son Theunis Jacobus, named for the oldest brother of the husband, must have been born at the earliest roughly two years after 1917, when Emma was born. More particularly, Theunis was likely born between 1919 and 1923, because, by 1925, Susanna, the mother, was already 42 years old and, realistically for the era, nearing the end of the childbearing phase of her life.
